Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and straight citizens will take to the streets of ANCHORAGE and FAIRBANKS on Saturday Nov. 15, 2008 to protest the passage of Proposition 8, California's anti-gay marriage amendment, and the lack of LGBT equal rights in Alaska.

Tens of thousands of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people and our allies have taken to the streets to show outrage with the outcome of California's Proposition 8. Prop 8 is a Constitutional Amendment to prohibit same-sex marriage, taking away a right that was granted before the vote. Same-sex marriage bans also passed in Arizona and Florida. The outcome of these propositions has angered the national gay community and our supporters. Many feel as if they are second-class citizens, but the fight is not over.

On Saturday, November 15, the LGBT community and their supporters will take to the streets in what could be the largest organized Protest since the Civil Rights Movement. To date, more than 250,000 individuals have pledged to take part in the nationwide event and descend upon the City Halls, State Capitols and the Nation's Capitol to make their voices heard. Signs, posters and numerous websites have already been created and the word is spreading quickly throughout the nation. JoinTheImpact.webpaint.com lists protest locations in all 50 States and the District of Columbia.

The message is simple, yet loud: Equal Rights for All.

The organizers of this nationwide event stress that these will be peaceful demonstrations. "Let's move as one full unit, on the same day, at the same hour, and let's show the United States of America that we too are United States citizens equal in mind, body and spirit and deserving of full equality under the law."

The Protest / Movement is scheduled to take place across the nation, Those interested in attending this historic event may find their local protest location by visiting: http://jointheimpact.wetpaint.com

Notice to All Employees

As of November 5, 2008, when President Obama is officially elected into office, our company will instill a few new policies which are in keeping with his new, inspiring issues of change and fairness:

1. All salespeople will be pooling their sales commissions into a common pool that will be divided equally between all of you. This will serve to give those of you who are underachieving a "fair shake."

2. All hourly employees will be pooling their wages, including overtime, into a common pool, dividing it equally amongst yourselves. This will help those who are "too busy for overtime" to reap the rewards from those who have more spare time and can work extra hours.

3. All top management will now be referred to as "the government." We will not participate in this "pooling" experience because the law doesn't apply to us.

4. The "government" will give eloquent speeches to all employees every week, encouraging its workers to continue to work hard "for the good of all."

5. The employees will be thrilled with these new policies because it's "good to spread the wealth." Those of you who have underachieved will finally get an opportunity; those of you who have worked hard and had success will feel more "patriotic."

6. The last few people who were hired should clean out their desks. Don't feel bad though, because President Obama will give you free healthcare, free handouts, free oil for heating your home, free food stamps, and he'll let you stay in your home for as long as you want even if you can't pay your mortgage. If you appeal directly to our democratic congress, you might even get a free flat screen TV and a coupon for free haircuts (shouldn't all Americans be entitled to nice looking hair?) !!!

If for any reason you are not happy with the new policies, you may want to rethink your vote on November 4th.
PFLAG is rallying progressive fair-minded supporters tomorrow morning for a streetcorner demonstration of support.

I think showing up for this one is important not so much for the political aspect of it (after all, how many people who are not actually themselves attending the nearby voodoo therapy session will even see our message so early on a Saturday morning?) but rather because we know for a fact it is exactly these kids being targeted who are most highly at risk for suicide or becoming homeless runaways. It is important that these kids see there are decent, rational, good folks in the community who accept them just as they are -and we believe God does as well.

'Reparative therapy' to convert the same-sex orientation of a person to an opposite-sex orientation has been demonstrated over and over --sometimes quite tragically-- to simply not work. Whether orientation is biological and instilled via chromosomes, hormonal influences in utero, via environmental factors during infancy, or some combination the fact is orientation is a done deal by age five or six, if not much earlier. This conference telling gay and lesbian people they are flawed and defective as human beings, despicable 'abominations' in the sight of God, and can be fixed or repaired like damaged widgets is wrong on so many levels. Some percentage of these poor lads and lasses will end up committing suicide, or repressing their true nature and then later acting out in unfortunate ways, or end up homeless and victimized when they are rejected and cast out or run away to avoid beatings and cruel psychological abuse at home.

At 7 a.m. tomorrow morning my family and I will be standing out on the corner of Lake Otis and Abbott not to make a political statement but to show the frightened kids being hustled by us and into this crazy-making reparative therapy conference that there are sane local people who say 'bullshit!' to all of that nonsense and support them just as they are, just as God made them.

We invite you to join us. There is plenty of parking in the Fred Meyer lot on Lake Otis and Abbott. Some of you may be unavailable or out of town, but if you have friends in Anchorage who may want to come and join us tomorrow morning then please feel welcome to pass this invitation along to them.

Best,
Steven & Family

---

Dear members, friends, allies of PFLAG;

On Saturday morning Sept. 13 at 7 am PFLAG and others will be gathering on the sidewalk at the corner of Lake Otis and Abbot in front of the Abbott Loop church. This is where a “reparative therapy” conference, sponsored by Focus on the Family, is taking place that day. This “therapy” has been proven to be ineffective and can be harmful and dangerous.

We will be passing out fliers to conference goers and carrying signs. Attached is the flier. Supportive parents are especially important in this effort to counter the anti- gay message this conference will be promoting to parents of gay kids and the kids themselves attending the conference.

If you can attend and bring a sign, the sign should contain a message of love and support for gay people. Examples: ”God loves us all, gays included,” “We love our gay son (or lesbian daughter)' and so on.

The conference starts at 8 am, so we should be finished by then.

If you have questions or comments, please send me an e-mail at: schlittler@ak.net or call the PFLAG voice mail at 566-1813 and leave a message.

Thank you!

Hate for Liberals and Gay People Drove Gunman, Police Say

By SHAILA DEWANc

Published: July 29, 2008

New York Times

www.nytimes.com/2008/07/29...29knox.html

A man who the police say entered a Unitarian Universalist church in Knoxville, Tenn., on Sunday and shot eight people, killing two, was motivated by a hatred for liberals and gay people, Chief Sterling P. Owen IV of the Knoxville Police Department said Monday.

“It appears that what brought him to this horrible event was his lack of being able to obtain a job, his frustration over that, and his stated hatred for the liberal movement,” Chief Owen said of the suspect, Jim D. Adkisson, 58. “We have recovered a four-page letter in which he describes his feelings and the reason that he claims he committed these offenses.”

According to a search warrant for Mr. Adkisson’s house filed by the police, during interrogation Mr. Adkisson admitted to the shooting and said “he had targeted the church because of its liberal leanings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country.”

Mr. Adkisson was not a member of the church and congregants said they did not recognize him, but two people said his former wife had once attended the church, Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist.

Mr. Adkisson was arrested at the scene and has been charged with one count of first-degree murder. More charges are expected, and Chief Owen said the police were treating the shooting as a hate crime.

The authorities and witnesses said the gunman, carrying a guitar case that concealed a 12-gauge shotgun, entered the church just as a children’s performance of “Annie Jr.” started.

Standing near the door of the sanctuary, he opened fire. Chief Owen said the man had fired only three blasts, but had 73 more rounds of ammunition with him. Mr. Adkisson’s letter indicated that he expected to be shot and killed by the police when they arrived, Chief Owen said, but church members tackled and subdued him.

“He certainly intended to take a lot of casualties,” Chief Owen said at a news conference Monday morning.

The Unitarian Universalist church has Protestant roots but embraces diverse opinions and creeds. “The theology is now considered beyond Christian,” said Janet Hayes, a spokeswoman for the Unitarian Universalist Association. The Knoxville church’s Web site says, “All religions, in every age and culture, possess not only intrinsic merit, but also potential value for those who have learned the art of listening.”

The church has been public in its embrace of liberal causes, advertising events like a summer sex education event for teenagers organized by Planned Parenthood and meetings of groups like Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays. Since the 1950s, its Web site says, the church has worked for “desegregation, racial harmony, fair wages, women’s rights and gay rights,” and has taken on environmental causes.

Several church members, still shaken from the shooting, declined to comment extensively on the church’s liberal views. “It does clarify just what type of hate crime this was,” said Mark Harmon, a Knox County commissioner and member of the church. “Regardless of motivations, when someone comes into your house of worship and shoots a shotgun indiscriminately it’s an earth-shattering act of hatred.”

Karen Massey, a neighbor of Mr. Adkisson’s in Powell, Tenn., said he had been a considerate friend. “We hate what he’s done,” she said. “He just snapped. He didn’t give us any indication.”

Ms. Massey said Mr. Adkisson had been raised in a strict Christian home, was openly antigay and had complained to her about his childhood religion. “He said if you read the whole Bible, everything in it contradicts itself.”

Chief Owen said Mr. Adkisson had recently been notified that his monthly food stamp allotment would be reduced or discontinued.

Chief Owen said investigators had found only two records of criminal activity for Mr. Adkisson, both charges of driving while intoxicated. But in 2000, his former wife, Liza Alexander, asked for an order of protection against him, saying he had threatened to “blow my brains out and then blow his own brains out.”

The dead were identified as Linda Kraeger, 61, a visitor from another church, and Gregory McKendry Jr., 60, an usher who some witnesses said had used his body to shield others from the gunman.

Robbie Brown contributed reporting.

I've thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there. In the late 1950s, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, and they were right. So when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.

When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said "Praise the Lord." And when the young leader said, "I will be for change and I'll bring you change," everyone yelled, "Viva Fidel!"

But nobody asked about the change, so by the time the executioner's guns went silent the people's guns had been taken away. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. By the time everyone received their free education it was worth nothing. By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him. By the time the change was finally implemented Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status. By the time the change was over more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes. You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans. And now I'm back to the beginning of my story.

Luckily, we would never fall in America for a young leader who promised change without asking, what change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America?
Would we?
Manuel Alvarez Jr. Sandy Hook.

I'm sure the Normandie invasion will get little or no notice in the "MSN"
I read this article by one of Americas hero's "Ollie North"this morning. I thought I'd share it.

D-Day in Context
By Oliver North

WASHINGTON -- Sixty-four years ago this week, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt came on the radio and implored Americans to "devote themselves in a continuance of prayer invoking thy help to our efforts." The "effort" of which he spoke was Operation Overlord, the D-Day landing of 150,000 American and Allied troops at Normandy. The risks were so great that Winston Churchill told the people of Britain: "The invasion has been launched. The result is with God." FDR described it as "a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our republic, our religion and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity."
Since then, those who fought their way ashore June 6, 1944, and successfully breached Hitler's Atlantic Wall have been honored justifiably for their participation in the momentous event. On the 40th anniversary of the operation, Ronald Reagan stood on that "lonely, windswept point on the northern shore of France" and spoke of that "giant undertaking unparalleled in human history" and praised "the boys of Pointe du Hoc the heroes who helped end a war."
But that was then; and this is now. This year, the anniversary of their achievement received little notice in the so-called mainstream media. Perhaps that's because it would draw uncomfortable parallels between those who stormed the coast of France in 1944 and those who are fighting now -- and winning -- a war against radical Islam. Unlike those who braved their way into Hitler's Fortress Europe, the young Americans fighting today's battles reap few accolades from the potentates of the press or the liberal "leadership" in Washington.
Last month, Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., described those now serving in our armed forces as "mercenaries" and claimed "we're buying them now." Apparently taking a page from Sen. John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign playbook, McDermott believes the young Americans winning this generation's war are those who could not get jobs or get into school. McDermott, you may recall, once was willing to negotiate -- without preconditions -- with Saddam Hussein. Now he is co-sponsoring legislation to require compulsory military conscription.
Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, who has asserted false claims of flying combat missions in Vietnam, routinely denigrates many of those serving in today's all-volunteer military. Two weeks ago, in attacking Sen. John McCain, Harkin observed, "It's one thing to have been drafted and served but another thing when you come from generations of military people and that's just how you're steeped, how you've learned, how you've grown up."
All of this amplifies a steady -- and unfortunately unanswered -- chorus from the far left that the U.S. military has been sent on "Mission: Impossible" by the Bush administration. It's a refrain that began when House Majority Whip James Clyburn confessed last year that if the surge turned out to be a success, it would be "a real big problem for us." By December, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had entered the echo chamber and began asserting -- despite all evidence to the contrary -- "the surge hasn't accomplished its goals."
Reid's unwillingness to acknowledge the success of our troops is amplified by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. In a recent interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Pelosi declared that while some progress is being made, it is because of "the good will of the Iranians. They decided in Basra when the fighting would end. They negotiated that cessation of hostilities -- the Iranians." Let's hope she had someone on her staff send the theocrats in Tehran a box of chocolates and a thank you note.
Those who persist in spreading a diatribe of disaster -- and who insist on denigrating the brightest, best-trained, best-led and best-equipped military force in the world -- have succeeded in building a significant following. The facts on the ground, however, simply don't support their thesis. In Iraq, Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa and the Philippines, the war against radical Islamic terror is being won by the finest military force the world ever has seen.
Even the editors of the liberal Washington Post finally have conceded this reality. A recent editorial baldly warned about Iraq: "Don't look now, but the U.S.-backed government and army may be winning the war." And it took to task those who comprise "the 'this-war-is-lost' caucus." Also, this week the foreign minister of the oil-rich United Arab Emirates visited the Iraqi capital for discussions on reopening their embassy in Baghdad.
The victories over al-Qaida and the Shiite militias in Iraq, against the Taliban and Osama bin Laden's remnant in Afghanistan, and over Muslim terrorists in Somalia and the Philippines have been won by U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen, guardsmen and Marines -- and the new allies they have advised and trained in these countries. Those who landed on the beaches of Normandy 64 years ago were American heroes. So are those who serve today.

Al-Qaida Free Since 2001
by Ann Coulter
Posted: 06/12/2008
In a conversation recently, I mentioned as an aside what a great president George Bush has been and my friend was surprised. I was surprised that he was surprised.
I generally don't write columns about the manifestly obvious, but, yes, the man responsible for keeping Americans safe from another terrorist attack on American soil for nearly seven years now will go down in history as one of America's greatest presidents.
Produce one person who believed, on Sept. 12, 2001, that there would not be another attack for seven years, and I'll consider downgrading Bush from "Great" to "Really Good."
Merely taking out Saddam Hussein and his winsome sons Uday and Qusay (Hussein family slogan: "We're the Rape Room People!") constitutes a greater humanitarian accomplishment than anything Bill Clinton ever did -- and I'm including remembering Monica's name on the sixth sexual encounter.
But unlike liberals, who are so anxious to send American troops to Rwanda or Darfur, Republicans oppose deploying U.S. troops for purely humanitarian purposes. We invaded Iraq to protect America.
It is unquestionable that Bush has made this country safe by keeping Islamic lunatics pinned down fighting our troops in Iraq. In the past few years, our brave troops have killed more than 20,000 al-Qaida and other Islamic militants in Iraq alone. That's 20,000 terrorists who will never board a plane headed for JFK -- or a landmark building, for that matter.
We are, in fact, fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them at, say, the corner of 72nd and Columbus in Manhattan -- the mere mention of which never fails to enrage liberals, which is why you should say it as often as possible.
The Iraq war has been a stunning success. The Iraqi army is "standing up" (as they say), fat Muqtada al-Sadr --the Dr. Phil of Islamofascist radicalism -- has waddled off in retreat to Iran, and Sadr City and Basra are no longer war zones. Our servicemen must be baffled by the constant nay-saying coming from their own country.
The Iraqis have a democracy -- a miracle on the order of flush toilets in that godforsaken region of the world. Despite its newness, Iraq's democracy appears to be no more dysfunctional than one that would condemn a man who has kept the nation safe for seven years while deifying a man who has accomplished absolutely nothing in his entire life except to give speeches about "change."
(Guess what Bill Clinton's campaign theme was in 1992? You are wrong if you guessed: "bringing dignity back to the White House." It was "change." In January 1992, James Carville told Steve Daley of The Chicago Tribune that it had gotten to the point that the press was complaining about Clinton's "constant talk of change.")
Monthly casualties in Iraq now come in slightly lower than a weekend with Anna Nicole Smith. According to a CNN report last week, for the entire month of May, there were only 19 troop deaths in Iraq. (Last year, five people on average were shot every day in Chicago.) With Iraqi deaths at an all-time low, Iraq is safer than Detroit -- although the Middle Eastern food is still better in Detroit.
Al-Qaida is virtually destroyed, surprising even the CIA. Two weeks ago, The Washington Post reported: "Less than a year after his agency warned of new threats from a resurgent al-Qaida, CIA Director Michael V. Hayden now portrays the terrorist movement as essentially defeated in Iraq and Saudi Arabia and on the defensive throughout much of the rest of the world, including in its presumed haven along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border."
It's almost as if there's been some sort of "surge" going on, as strange as that sounds.
Just this week, The New York Times reported that al-Qaida and other terrorist groups in Southeast Asia have all but disappeared, starved of money and support. The U.S. and Australia have been working closely with the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia, sending them counterterrorism equipment and personnel.
But no one notices when 9/11 doesn't happen. Indeed, if we had somehow stopped the 9/11 attack, we'd all be watching Mohammed Atta being interviewed on MSNBC, explaining his lawsuit against the Bush administration. Maureen Dowd would be writing columns describing Khalid Sheik Mohammed as a "wannabe" terrorist being treated like Genghis Khan by an excitable Bush administration.
We begin to forget what it was like to turn on the TV, see a tornado, a car chase or another Pamela Anderson marriage and think: Good -- another day without a terrorist attack.
But liberals have only blind hatred for Bush -- and for those brute American interrogators who do not supply extra helpings of béarnaise sauce to the little darlings at Guantanamo with sufficient alacrity.
The sheer repetition of lies about Bush is wearing people down. There is not a liberal in this country worthy of kissing Bush's rear end, but the weakest members of the herd run from Bush. Compared to the lickspittles denying and attacking him, Bush is a moral giant -- if that's not damning with faint praise. John McCain should be so lucky as to be running for Bush's third term. Then he might have a chance

Energy: The average price for regular gas hit $4 a gallon over the weekend. Gas prices have risen 75% since Nancy Pelosi took over. Where's the energy independence Democrats promised two years ago?

In November of 2006, House Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi issued a press release touting the Democrats' "common-sense plan to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices."

She accused the oil companies of "price gouging." The price of gasoline when the Democrats took control of Congress was around $2.25 per gallon.

The average price of regular gas crept over the $4-per-gallon barrier over the weekend, as measured by AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.

That represents a more than 75% increase in the retail price of a gallon of gasoline on Pelosi's watch. Call it the "Pelosi premium" we're all now paying.

It's a problem driven by domestic supply restrictions imposed by the Democratic Congress in the face of growing worldwide demand. The Democrats preach energy independence while they do everything in their power to prevent it. If the American people truly want change, this would be it.

A Gallup poll released in May showed that 57% of the American people wanted the U.S. to drill in coastal and wilderness areas. The percentage of Americans who bought Pelosi's line about price gouging fell from 34% in May 2007 to 20% in May 2008. It could be a winning issue for the Republicans and John McCain.

More than 15 billion barrels of oil have been sent down the Alaskan pipeline from Prudhoe Bay, some 60 miles to the west of ANWR, over the past three decades, much more than the six months' supply expected in the beginning by those who predicted a similar environmental disaster there.

The local caribou and other critters have thrived. Yet, Pelosi and the Democrats want to to keep ANWR's estimated 10.6 billion barrels of oil off the market and out of our gas tanks.

Buried in a Department of Interior Appropriations bill passed in December 2007 was an amendment proposed by Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo., passed by a 219-215 vote in June, that prevented the establishment of regulations for leasing lands to drill for oil shale.

The Western U.S. is estimated to have reserves of a trillion barrels (yes, that's the real number) trapped in porous shale rock, an amount three times the oil reserves of Saudi Arabia. On May 15, 2008, the Senate Appropriations Committee in a 15-14 party line vote rejected an amendment by Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., to allow oil shale drilling and overturn the Udall moratorium.

The U.S. Congress has voted consistently to keep 85% of America's offshore oil and gas off-limits, while China and Cuba drill 60 miles from Key West, Fla. The U.S. Minerals Management Service says that the restricted areas contain 86 billion barrels of oil and 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

There are 3,200 oil rigs off the coast of Louisiana. During Katrina, not a single drop was spilled. More than 7 billion barrels have been pumped from these wells over the past quarter-century, yet only one thousandth of one percent has been spilled.

A study by Louisiana's Sea Grant college shows that there's 50 times more marine life around oil platforms that act as artificial reefs than in the surrounding mud bottoms. Some 85% of Louisiana fishing trips involve fishing around these offshore rigs.

The Flower Garden coral reefs lie off the Louisiana-Texas border. They are surrounded by oil platforms that have been pumping for 50 years.

According to federal biologist G.P. Schmahl, "The Flower Gardens are much healthier, more pristine than anything in the Florida Keys. It was a surprise to me. And I think it's a surprise to most people."

We would suggest that John McCain revisit his reservations about ANWR and run against the drill-nothing Congress. Energy development and the environment are not mutually exclusive.

In fact, we would suggest that the first joint town hall meeting with Barack Obama proposed by McCain be held on one of those offshore Louisiana rigs.

Gravel Seeks Libertarian Nomination, Promises LGBT Focus

Former senator Mike Gravel of Alaska, the erstwhile Democratic presidential candidate, announced last week that he is leaving his party and will run for president as a Libertarian. Skyler McKinley, a spokesman for Gravel, told The New York Times that Gravel would seek the Libertarian nomination at the party’s convention in Denver, which begins May 22.

In an e-mail message sent to supporters on Wednesday, Gravel expressed disenchantment with the Democratic Party. “The fact is, the Democratic Party today is no longer the party of FDR,” he wrote. “It is a party that continues to sustain war, the military-industrial complex and imperialism -- all of which I find anathema to my views.”

A vocal supporter of marriage equality, Gravel also criticized his Democratic opponents’ opposition to same-sex marriage at a Human Rights Campaign debate in August 2007. Gravel has urged the LGBT community to stand behind his candidacy and plans to refocus national attention on marriage equality.

“On gay marriage, there’s no difference between the presumptive Republican and Democratic nominees,” Gravel said in a press release. “Neither of them believes you are worthy of equal rights. This disgusts me, and it should disgust you.”

About 15 hopefuls are vying for the Libertarian nomination. Andrew Davis, a spokesman for the Libertarian National Committee, told The New York Times that it won't be easy for Gravel: Party members might disapprove of Gravel’s support of universal health care, funded by a national retail tax.

“Whether or not some of our delegates will accept Mike Gravel with some of his positions, that has yet to be seen,” Davis said. (The Advocate)

John the farmer was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young layers (hens), called "pullets," and ten roosters, whose job it was to fertilize the eggs.

The farmer kept records and any rooster that didn't perform went into the Soup pot and was replaced. That took an awful lot of his time, so he bought a set of tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone so John could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report simply by listening to the bells.

The farmer's favorite rooster was old Butch, a very fine specimen he was, too. But on this particular morning John noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! John went to investigate.

The other roosters were chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing. The pullets, hearing the Roosters coming, would run for cover.

But to Farmer John's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges who awarded old Butch the No Bell Piece Prize as well as the Pulletsurprise!

Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making: who else but a politician could figure out how to win two highly coveted awards by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention.

Vote carefully . . . The bells are not always audible.

I've been leaning toward a "Yes" vote mainly for two reasons, one specific and one broadly philosophical:
-deregulated industries tend to favor free markets and eventually benefit customers through lower prices and higher quality, and
-drivers are without health insurance now and would be able to purchase it under deregulation (according to some drivers who spoke to this issue) and that seems like a weighty point for in fairness to them and in the interest of keeping them off the public tab if/when something happens.

Any thoughts? I (and three others who are asking me for advice on that issue) really have not decided yet and would be interested to hear your inclinations.

This pairing would also be great life insurance for Obama, as the military industrial complex would go to extraordinary lengths in insuring his safety if Kucinich would be the one to replace him. Kucinich running together with Obama as his VP would also recover most of the votes which will now be siphoned off to Nader; otherwise, that 3% to 5% or so is gone.
Learn to Trade with a FREE Guide.WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Voters in two Vermont towns on Tuesday approved a measure that would instruct police to arrest President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney for "crimes against our Constitution," local media reported.

The nonbinding, symbolic measure, passed in Brattleboro and Marlboro in a state known for taking liberal positions on national issues, instructs town police to "extradite them to other authorities that may reasonably contend to prosecute them."

State lawmakers have passed nonbinding resolutions to end the war in Iraq and impeach Bush and Cheney, and several towns have also passed resolutions of impeachment. None of them have caught on in Washington.

Here below follows a copy of the letter I just sent to both his legislative and Conoco-Phillips e-mail addresses, with background info.

-----------------------------------------------

Hi Kevin-

Courtesy copy for you following below of this note I just sent out to everyone. Kudos on the shrewd maneuvering!

Regards,
Steven

---

Hello Neighbors-

"Now why," I asked myself upon reading the paper "is our very own Rep. Kevin Meyer is going up against a wildly popular governor of his own party as well against all common sense as regards the fiscal value of spending $600K in Head Start funding now --think of it as "prevention"-- versus the tens of millions of tax dollars sure to be ongoingly wasted later in remedial education, increased health care costs, higher law enforcement/judicial/prison costs, and lower worker productivity if Head Start services are underfunded? This point is rather starkly obvious, so it was a puzzlement. While getting Kevin Meyer to actually meet my family face to face has been about as easy to accomplish as tacking Jell-O to a wall --which is arguably not too smart on his part given that we are super-voter constituents who actively campaign, contribute, and vote when we are stirred up-- my impression is that he is not actually a stupid man.

So, if Kevin Meyer is not actually stupid, then why is he doing something which seems stupid?

Well, let's ponder a bit further. The abject disgrace to our district and legislature named John Cowdery will not be running again for this district's senate seat (thankfully enough, as we have gone without representation for entirely too long given Cowdery's shameless refusal to resign) and Kevin Meyer is putting himself forward as being just the right Republican to fill Cowdery's shoes.

Now, if Kevin Meyer approved the $600K for Head Start without so much as a demur then he might be vulnerable to looking somehow like a (horrors!) Democrat in funding the proven-effective public education program. By objecting, however, he not only has the free advertising of his name in the papers and on TV over and over again while this issue hashes out, but also has cover for "giving in" to the wildly popular Sarah Palin and doing what he surely realizes is the fiscally prudent thing by reinstating the threatened $600K back into Head Start. This way he comes out smelling like a rose all across the spectrum to:
A) Palin-lovers in all their mighty legions,
B) hardcore conservatives and the Ron Paul cadre ("he did his best, but the governor was twisting his arm you know"),
C) fiscally rational and fair-minded voters who care about equity and progress in this state, -and even the
D) bleeding-heart commie-pinko fags (all two of them in this district!)
This is good when one is a Republican --employed by Conoco-Phillips in this year of especially oily politics-- seeking to follow in John Cowdery's illustrious footsteps to the senate.

So, more carefully considered, we see that our clever Representative with his lean and hungry profile has indeed been reading Machiavelli late into the night and could be considered to rival perhaps even Mark Begich for skill at landing on his feet.

Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe Kevin Meyer is just shooting his own foot off. We will know for sure when we see whether or not that $600K goes back into effective prevention via Head Start.

Best,
Steven

-------

Daily News editorial follows here:

Gov. Sarah Palin recently heeded some Democratic legislators and agreed to seek a boost in the state's contribution to Head Start. (Good call there, governor). Unfortunately, their efforts hit a wall inside the House Finance Committee. The education subcommittee denied the governor's request and essentially flat-funded the state contribution for the sixth straight year.

Anchorage Republican Kevin Meyer was one of the Head Start skeptics. He said the Palin administration hadn't shown that the program, which is usually run by a non profit organization in a community, could ramp up and actually serve more kids.

That objection will be easy to address. The demand is there, on the 1,000-child wait list. Gov. Palin has proposed a modest increase -- less than 10 percent of the state's usual share. We're not talking about a tidal wave of new preschoolers. When spending the money, the state can give priority to programs that can add students right away, without big startup costs.

Rep. Meyer also noted that Head Start is a federal, not a state, program -- as if that's a problem. By adding modest sums to a program run by the feds, the state gets more bang for the buck, compared to launching a duplicative program of its own.

Why don't local governments fund Head Start, the same way they contribute to their K-12 schools, Rep. Meyer asked. One answer: Head Start is most needed in poor communities, and many of them are places where the state already funds 100 percent of education because there is no tax base.

Rep. Meyer also asserted that we don't know Head Start works. Actually we do. After four decades and many studies, the success of Head Start is accepted. The only debate is over how many years the benefits last after the children graduate from the program.

Research shows that the quality of K-12 schools the Head Start children attend later makes a significant difference in their academic performance. So the lesson is -- we can't just dump Head Start kids into bad schools and expect academic miracles. That's a surprise?

The federal government oversees the quality of each Head Start school, with exhaustive reporting requirements and an on-site visit every three years. Surely Rep. Meyer is not suggesting we should waste money on a big contract with outside education experts to prove Alaska's Head Start is just as successful as others in the nation.

Rejecting Gov. Palin's funding boost was not a final decision, Rep. Meyer told the Daily News. The money could be added as the budget moves further along toward final passage.

Rep. Meyer and his colleagues should add the $600,000 for Head Start next week when the full committee takes up the budget. If Alaska is going to meet the zero-failure rate demanded by the No Child Left Behind Act, children in poverty need a head start. More of them will get it, if legislators like Kevin Meyer do the right thing on this funding request.

BOTTOM LINE: Quit the quibbling: Head Start works.

The more impoverished Alaska children who can attend, the better.

Hi Friends-

Governor Palin just appointed her middle school basketball coach, Lew Bradley, to Alaska's 7-member Board of Game.

Alaska needs a balanced and competent Board of Game. Unfortunately, Lew Bradley fails to add either balance or experience to this highly influential regulatory board.

It’s time for the Governor to correct her mistake by withdrawing Bradley’s name from consideration.

I just called Governor Palin to urge her to select a qualified candidate like George Matz to this important post and hope you will, too.

Please do call Governor Palin’s office at (907) 465-3500 and leave a public opinion message urging her to make the right choice for Alaska by nominating a qualified candidate like George Matz to the Board of Game.

George Matz has asked to be appointed to the Board of Game because he believes that a balanced Board of Game should protect the right of Alaskans to both hunt and view wildlife -- two vital components of Alaska’s culture and economy.

As a former Board of Game member, leader in several conservation organizations and someone who has professional experience in state policy and fiscal matters, George Matz will bring a sorely lacking diversity of perspective to the Board of Game. Click on the link below to learn more about George Matz and the Board of Game.

http://action.defenders.org/georgematz

I hope you’ll join me in calling on the Governor to start listening to the people of Alaska and nominate George Matz to the Board of Game.

Please make this call for wildlife today -you can leave a message for Governor Palin by calling her office today at (907) 465-3500 and asking to leave a comment. Please urge her to make the right decision for Alaska by nominating a qualified candidate like George Matz to the Board of Game.

Calls from Alaskans do have an impact in such matters.

Thanks for taking the time to help!

Best,
Steven

PS: Please share this request with friends concerned about promoting scientifically based wildlife management in Alaska versus more "management" by the Good 'Ol Boy system.
Here in Alaska earlier today Ron Paul was interviewed on news radio AM 750 KFQD, this morning between 10:05 and 10:25am. I called in and --as the very first question put to Ron Paul during the broadcast-- asked him:

"Dr. Paul, Congressman Dennis Kucinich just announced he is dropping out of the presidential contest, so you will be the lone candidate remaining in the race who is not corporately funded. On Feb. 5th here in Alaska all those people who were intending to caucus for Kucinich would like to still be able to caucus for a candidate who is not corporately funded, upholds the constitution, and opposes oil wars. You and congressmen Kucinich agree on many significant issues. So, my question is, in a Ron Paul presidential administration would an invitation be extended to Dennis Kucinich for him to fill a cabinet level position?"

To briefly paraphrase congressman Paul's answer, he said that yes, he has high regard for Dennis Kucinich, considers him a personal friend as well as a respected colleague, and would look for Dennis Kucinich to take just such a leadership role particularly in the areas of foreign policy and (domestically) with regard to the preservation of American civil liberties -areas on which he considers Dennis Kucinich to be highly knowledgeable and on which they agree regarding policy. Ron Paul was very respectful, complimentary, warm, and enthusiastic regarding Dennis Kucinich.

Ron Paul's full comments on a cabinet post for Dennis Kucinich in a Ron Paul presidential administration may be heard in their entirety direct from his own lips to your ears sometime around 6:00pm tonight when the podcast update for today's Mark Colavecchio show is posted at the KFQD website.
Huge thanks to Ambird for the heads-up alerting us to a unique opportunity to put this question to congressman Ron Paul!

Condensed World History

For those that don't know about history...... here is a condensed
version.

Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic
hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer

and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.

The two most important events in all of history were:
1 The invention of beer, and
2. The invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the
beer.

These were the foundation of modern civilization and together were the
catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:
1. Liberals
2. Conservatives.

Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning
of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented
yet, so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to
be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages
were formed.

Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to barbeque at
night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is
known as the Conservative movement.

Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live
off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly barbeques and doing
the sewing, fetching, and hairdressing. This was the beginning of the
Liberal movement.

Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. The rest became

known as girlie-men.

Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats,
the invention of group therapy, group hugs, and the concept of
Demo
